IMPROVING THE MATH SCORES OF YOUR UNDER-RESOURCED SECONDARY STUDENTS

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTOR
Are you among the growing number of teachers who struggle to build relationships with today’s Gen Y students? Do you have students that in spite of what you’ve tried and done they still aren’t passing state assessment? From understanding today’s students to designing specific interventions that will have an impact, this workshop will provide a broad base of approaches for your immediate use in today’s classroom. Based on Dr. Ruby Payne’s newest publication, Under-Resourced Learners: 8 Strategies to Boost Student Achievement, you will learn a six-step process to follow each student’s performance and address AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress); strategies for addressing relational learning; checklists for assessing student resources; specific content interventions related to reading, vocabulary, and mental models in math; and checklists for calibrating student assignments. Familiarity with Dr. Payne’s original work, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, is helpful but not required.

The companion workshop for the reading/writing content areas is also available.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Participants in this workshop will include those teaching secondary math courses up to and including algebra, as well as teachers and paraprofessionals working with special education and Title I math. In addition, administrators are encouraged to attend. Teachers working in any other math programs/courses that target the state assessment will also benefit from this workshop.
