Each culture is unique, and each possesses reasons to stand proud. Educators always aspire to create a welcoming environment while navigating among many unknowns. Some culturally rich practices that display respect in one culture can often be misinterpreted for apathy, disrespect, or lack of ambition in another. For example, the practice of calling someone “Teacher” comes from a custom of displaying great esteem. However, it is not often identified as a respectful address in our schools. This workshop focuses on empowering your staff with information that promotes confidence in knowing more about the finer details behind what we experience every day. Hispanic/Latino students have the highest dropout rate. Many experience unintended cultural tension in school when behaviors are misinterpreted. Everyone benefits when they are comfortable within their own skin, especially among varied circles. Confidence is contagious when it comes from a place of genuine acceptance and feels invitational.
